Birmingham’s Driving Test Centres: Which One to Choose and Why

Guide to Birmingham Driving Test Centres

Birmingham has six main driving test centres within the city and its surrounding areas: Kings Heath, Kingstanding, South Yardley, Garretts Green, Shirley, and Dudley (Kingswinford). Pass rates across these centres range from approximately 40% to 58%, based on DVSA data for the 2024/25 financial year. Choosing the right centre for your test is not about chasing the highest pass rate. It is about picking the one where you have practised the roads, feel comfortable with the routes, and can drive at your best on the day.

At Select Drive, our instructors teach across the West Midlands and take learners to Kings Heath, Kingstanding, and Dudley every week. This guide covers what each Birmingham test centre is actually like, what the pass rates mean in context, and how to choose the right one for you.

A Closer Look at Each Centre

Kings Heath

Kings Heath is the busiest test centre serving south Birmingham. It sits on the A435 Alcester Road South, right next to the constant traffic of the Druids Lane roundabout. Routes from Kings Heath include fast multi-lane dual carriageways, large roundabouts like Beckett’s Farm, and residential streets around Maypole and Highters Heath. Speed camera zones where the limit drops from 40mph to 30mph are a regular feature. There is no candidate parking and no toilet facilities at the centre.

Kings Heath has a pass rate of approximately 47%, just below the national average. For detailed route knowledge, pass rate breakdowns, and tips from our instructors, see our full guide to Kings Heath driving test centre.

Kingstanding

Kingstanding serves north Birmingham from its base on Birdbrook Road. The centre was rebuilt in 2022/23 and has modern facilities including on-site parking and toilets. Routes are defined by the A452 Chester Road, which carries a 50 to 40 to 30 speed camera sequence that catches many learners out. Kingstanding Circle is a busy multi-lane roundabout, and the surrounding residential streets are narrow with parked cars on both sides. Routes include approximately 9 roundabouts, one-way systems, and 20mph school zones near Oscott.

Kingstanding has a pass rate of approximately 44.7%, improved from around 37% in 2017/18. For detailed route knowledge and test preparation tips, see our full guide to Kingstanding driving test centre.

South Yardley

South Yardley sits on Clay Lane in the eastern part of Birmingham. Routes pass through dense urban areas with heavy traffic, busy junctions, and dual carriageways. The pass rate at South Yardley is approximately 40%, one of the lowest in the Birmingham area. The complex urban routes and high traffic volume contribute to this, but learners who have practised specifically on the roads around Yardley, Stechford, and Sheldon will find the routes manageable.

Garretts Green

Garretts Green on Granby Avenue offers a broader mix of route types than some inner-city centres. Routes include rural roads, residential streets, and complex roundabouts alongside busier urban stretches. The pass rate sits at approximately 41%. Garretts Green can be a good option for learners who are confident across a variety of road types rather than specialising in one.

Shirley

Shirley is technically in Solihull, not Birmingham, but it serves many Birmingham learners, especially those from the south side of the city. Located on the Stratford Road, Shirley has the highest pass rate in the Birmingham area at approximately 58.1%. The routes are quieter and more suburban than Kings Heath or Kingstanding, with less congestion and fewer multi-lane roundabouts. This does not make Shirley an easy pass. It means the roads are different, and learners who have practised on those specific roads will be more comfortable.

Dudley (Kingswinford)

Dudley test centre sits inside the Pensnett Trading Estate in Kingswinford, west of Birmingham. It opened in 2018 to replace the now-closed Lower Gornal centre. Dudley’s defining feature is its gradient-heavy routes. The roads around Kingswinford are rarely flat for long, with hill starts, junctions at crests with limited visibility, and steep residential streets. Routes also include the A4101 and A491 dual carriageways and the complex Merry Hill Centre roundabouts. On-site DVSA parking bays and toilets are available.

Dudley has a pass rate of approximately 45.8%. For detailed route knowledge and preparation tips, see our full guide to Dudley driving test centre.

What Pass Rates Actually Tell You (and What They Do Not)

DVSA data shows pass rates across Birmingham test centres ranging from approximately 40% to 58%. These figures change from year to year and are shaped by the mix of learners who take their test at each centre, not by the difficulty of the centre itself.

A lower pass rate does not mean a centre is harder. It often means a higher proportion of underprepared learners take their test there. South Yardley and Garretts Green serve densely populated urban areas with many large driving schools that put learners forward for their test before they are truly ready. Shirley’s higher pass rate partly reflects a different learner mix: its suburban location attracts more learners who have practised on the quieter road types that feature on its routes.

The pass rate that matters is the one you build through your own preparation. A learner who has practised specifically on the roads, roundabouts, and junctions used on their chosen centre’s test routes will pass at a significantly higher rate than the published average, regardless of which centre they choose.

How to Choose the Right Test Centre

Pick the one where you have practised the roads. This is the single most important factor. If your driving lessons have been in Quinton and Harborne, you know the roads around Kings Heath. If you have been learning in Smethwick and Oldbury, Kingstanding routes will feel familiar. If your lessons cover Halesowen, Rowley Regis, or Blackheath, Dudley is the natural fit. Familiarity with the actual roads on test routes reduces stress and removes the element of surprise on test day.

Consider the route character, not just the pass rate. Each centre has a different road profile. Kings Heath has fast dual carriageways and complex roundabouts. Kingstanding has speed camera zones and narrow residential streets. Dudley has hills and gradients. Shirley has quieter suburban roads. Choose the road type you are most confident on, or the one your instructor has prepared you for.

Check waiting times. Availability varies between centres and can change month to month. Waiting times are typically 10 to 16 weeks across Birmingham. If your first-choice centre has a long wait, your instructor can advise whether an alternative centre would suit your skill set.

Ask your instructor. Your driving instructor sees how you drive on different road types every lesson. They know which centre’s routes best match your strengths and where you would be most confident on test day. At Select Drive, we recommend a test centre based on where you have been practising, not on which centre has the highest published pass rate.

Select Drive Test Centre Guides

We have published detailed guides for the three test centres our learners use most. Each guide covers the centre’s address and facilities, current DVSA pass rate data, the specific roads, junctions, and roundabouts on test routes, common reasons learners fail at that centre, and how Select Drive prepares you.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which is the easiest driving test centre in Birmingham?

Shirley has the highest pass rate at 58.1%, but that does not make it the easiest for every learner. The easiest test centre for you is the one where you have practised the roads and feel most confident. A learner who has never driven in Shirley will find its routes unfamiliar, which can be more stressful than testing at a lower-pass-rate centre they know well.

Which Birmingham driving test centre has the best pass rate?

Shirley has the highest pass rate at approximately 58.1% (2024/25 DVSA data). Among the Birmingham city centres, Kings Heath is the highest at 47.0%. Pass rates are not a measure of how good a centre is. They reflect the mix of learners who test there.

Can I choose which driving test centre to take my test at?

Yes. You can book your practical driving test at any DVSA test centre in England through the official DVSA booking service. You do not have to test at the centre nearest to your home. However, you should choose one where you have practised the routes.

How long is the waiting time for a driving test in Birmingham?

Waiting times vary by centre and can change month to month. As of 2026, typical waiting times across Birmingham test centres are 10 to 16 weeks. Booking early and checking for cancellation slots can help you get an earlier date.

Does Select Drive prepare learners for specific test centres?

Yes. Select Drive instructors practise the actual roads, junctions, and roundabouts used on test routes at Kings Heath, Kingstanding, and Dudley. Your instructor will recommend a test centre based on where you have been learning and which routes best match your strengths.

There is no single best driving test centre in Birmingham. The right choice depends on where you have been practising, which road types you are most confident on, and where your instructor believes you will perform best. At Select Drive, we offer route-specific training for Kings Heath, Kingstanding, and Dudley test centres, with over 20 years of experience teaching across Birmingham and the West Midlands. Book your lessons today and get expert guidance from an instructor who knows your test routes.
